The Lake & Peninsula Borough is located on the Alaska Peninsula, southwest of Anchorage. It is comprised of 17 communities, including 6 incorporated cities. It is bordered on the west by Bristol Bay and on the east by the Gulf of Alaska.
Formed in April 1989 with the intention of giving voice to our small communities by unifying an area as large as Ireland.
Lake and Peninsula Borough uses a council-manager form of government. This means the Assembly functions like a board of directors in a corporation. They establish policy, pass ordinances and develop the overall vision. The Assembly hires a professional manager to oversee the administrative operations, implement the policies and to advise the Assembly. This position is like a CEO. In this form of government, the mayor does not have any more power than any other Assembly member, but does have leadership responsibilities similar to a non-executive chairman in a corporation.
The borough chose to accept planning powers in 1992. This department manages subdivisions and platting, development permits, long term capital project planning, emergency management, and mapping.
Danica Wilson is the Community Development Coordinator and works with the planning commission and residents to fulfill the planning, platting, emergency management, and special projects needs for the Borough.
Planning a new commercial or industrial project? You may need a development permit.
The Borough code requires all privately owned projects that are not residential to submit a development permit after all other project permits are obtained.
