The Lake & Peninsula Borough is located on the Alaska Peninsula, southwest of Anchorage. It is comprised of 17 communities, including 6 incorporated cities. It is bordered on the west by Bristol Bay and on the east by the Gulf of Alaska.
Formed in April 1989 with the intention of giving voice to our small communities by unifying an area as large as Ireland.
The Lake and Peninsula Borough operates under a council-manager form of government. In this structure, the Assembly acts like a board of directors, setting policy, passing ordinances, and shaping the overall vision for the borough. The Assembly appoints a professional manager, similar to a CEO, to oversee day-to-day operations, implement policies, and provide guidance. The mayor holds the same voting power as other Assembly members but takes on leadership duties comparable to a non-executive chairman.
PAIC and the Lake & Peninsula Borough
The Port Alsworth Improvement Corporation works closely with the Lake & Peninsula Borough to support the residents of Port Alsworth. As a nonprofit community association in an unincorporated area, PAIC partners with the Borough on planning, grant administration, and community projects. This collaboration ensures that state and borough resources are effectively used to provide services, maintain infrastructure, and improve the quality of life for our community.
The Lake & Peninsula Borough assumed planning powers in 1992, and its Community Development Department oversees subdivisions and platting, development permits, long-term capital project planning, emergency management, and mapping. Danica Wilson, the Community Development Coordinator, works closely with the Planning Commission and local residents to address the borough’s planning, platting, emergency management, and special project needs.
Planning a new commercial or industrial project? You may need a development permit.
The Borough code requires all privately owned projects that are not residential to submit a development permit after all other project permits are obtained.
